SEGAMAT: Homeless flood victims in Johor will temporarily move into government quarters and rented premises.

The state government is now working with Syarikat Perumahan Negara (SPN) to allocate low cost houses at subsidised rates to the victims.

Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said about 10 homeless families in Kota Tinggi and 19 in Segamat had been identified so far.

He said the Kota Tinggi District Office was looking for suitable government quarters to house the victims.

Those in Segamat would be given MYR100 a month to enable them to rent houses until their houses were rebuilt.

“We will help them to rebuild their homes if their houses are from the public housing scheme,” Ghani said.

For those squatting on government land such as in Kampung Tembioh, Kota Tinggi, he said they have to move out as the area was prone to floods.

“The village is by the river and is on low land. It floods even during normal rain,” he pointed out.

On another matter, Ghani said more funds under the state budget would be channelled to flood victims.

He also visited flood victims in Kampung Jawa where 180 Royal Air Force (TUDM) personnel based in Kuantan helped in the cleaning.

In Kota Tinggi, state Works Committee chairman Datuk Baderi Dasuki said 30 families in Kampung Kelantan and Kampung Panti here will temporarily move to medium and low cost houses.

“We will discuss with SPN on moving them permanently to a new housing estate,”

he said, adding that all district officers

were now compiling details of homeless victims.

Baderi said the state would subsidise a third of the cost of the house and the victims have to pay the rest by instalments.

He said the initial estimate of MYR90.7mil needed for repairs to roads and bridges is expected to double.

He said some MYR7.7mil had been spent on emergency repairs to roads.

I don't think MYR 100 a month isn't enough to survive to rent a house... but it is better than nothing.
