Malaysia’s First Day Cover of the year 2008: Historical Bridges
February 28th 2008 06:41
I used to have the joy of collecting stamps from around the world influenced by my dad, and the last 2 years when my mother admitted into the hospital due to the stroke of Steven Johnson Syndrome (medical allergy disease) I was pretty much broke. This year since I am here in Kuala Lumpur I must make a point to try my best to get the entire series of first day covers for year 2008 once more.
I usually do not actually get the “First Day Cover Sets”, which consist of the envelope and the stamps with the date stamped as a proof. I usually get an entire sheet and keep them. Sometimes I used these limited edition stamps and send them out to all my friends around the world during festive season or special occasions. But ever sheet cost me a little fortune to get them so I told myself if I come across issues that doesn’t fancy me I’ll just get the envelope and individual stamps each; and if I like that issue series I’ll get the sheet as well and keep for special occasions.
So there I go, went to the nearest post office that my work place is. It took me a while to wait for it, as there were loads of people. There was a lady who has decided to get stacks of sheets and use these limited editions to send out to clients. How thoughtful of her, if the clients appreciate her effort….
For me, this time I realised that the post office decided not to pre-stick a 30 Sen stamp onto the first day envelope. Instead it is blank and allows customers to put in their desired stamps (they usually have 4 series range from 30 Sen to 1 Ringgit), and then they will chop it for the customer.
So lets see what this first issue of the year has to say about their series.
The Historical Bridges of Malaysia
30 Sen Design: The Merdeka Bridge, Kedah
The Merdeka Bridge, built in 1955, was officially launched in 1957; the year Malaya achieved independence. Spanning the Sungai Muda, the longest river in the state of Kedah, the bridge serves as a major link for transportation of goods and people. The river also marks the border between the state Penang and Kedah.
Sungai Muda also provides water for consumption and irrigation of rice fields to Penang’s province of Seberang Perai. This concrete truss girder bridge was designed and built by the Malaysian Public Works Department.
50 Sen Design 1: The Victoria Bridge, Perak
The Victoria Bridge is the oldest railway bridge in Malaya, which is situated in Karai, Perak. Built in 1897, it was the most advance bridge in terms of its engineering in the Far East at that time. This bridge provided a communication link for the growth of the tin mining industry and the development of the mining towns in the Malayan Peninsular. With the opening of this bridge, the whole of the west coast from Perai to Johor Bahru was linked by rail.
50 Sen Design 2: The Kota Bridge, Klang
The city of Klang is divided by the Klang River and was linked by the Brickfield Bridge built in 1907. It was destroyed in 1941 during World War II, resulting in great difficulty in transportation and communication, especially for goods transported from Klang Port to other cities. In 1958 a double-decker bridge was constructed, the first such bridge in Malaysia, with a pedestrian walkway at the lower halk. This double-decker truss girder bridge was named the Kota Bridge. (Jambatan Kota)
1 Ringgit Design: The Sungai Segamat Bridge, Johor
This bridge was built in 1933, to provide means of transportation to the Segamat district as an initiative by the government to develop the district for its agricultural activities and to boost its economy. The Sungai Segamat Bridge is a Steel Pratt Girder Bridge type with the length of 99.43 meters. It provides railway crossing over the Segamat River.
