HOW MUCH SHOULD I TAKE and HOW SHOULD I SHIP IT

International Shipping of Belongings
When I decided to move to Malaysia the first thing I had to do was to put my house on the market and start cleaning up the clutter. I lived in a two story single family house with a basement and attic and a sizeable back yard. Because of the housing bubble burst in the US it took me about 8 months to sell my house. Once I signed the purchase and sales agreement I had to think fast about what I was going to do with my furniture and personal belongings.
I surfed the web looking for international movers and received a few quotes. The prices were quite reasonable, but I soon realized that I really didn't have that much furniture I wanted to bring with me. I had my favorite comfortable leather sofa and love seat as well as my bedroom furniture. I was not sure, however, that the furniture would fit into my new house. I put the decision off for a short time while I pondered the possibilities.
In the meantime I figured I would never use the gardening tools, lawn mower and snow thrower. I either sold them or gave them away to neighbors. After I did this I really went into high gear. I would never use my winter clothes again. So they went to charity. I had a yard sale and attempted to sell what I could, but unfortunately it rained cats and dogs that day and nothing was sold. I managed to sell some Asian artwork and other items on Ebay. I decided to sell my flatscreen tv and all of my furniture, rather that to ship them to Malaysia. I thought I might as well use the moneyfrom those sales and start all over with brand new appliances and furniture.
Once I started clearing everything out of the house the process moved quickly. My good friend Barbara was a great help to me when I started to procrastinate about getting rid of some things. I decided to mail only 4 medium sized boxes to my new home. I packed only a few clothes, mainly shorts with a few dress clothes. If I needed clothes I could buy them at a cheaper price in Malaysia. I took some rather expensive pieces of art that would fit into the boxes and I also took souvenirs from my travels throughout the world. I had already sent music cd's and other personal documents etc. to Kevin, so this was taken care of.
I asked a close friend to mail the boxes once I had settled in to the new condo unit. I asked him just to use the United States Postal Service and I would reimburse him. Once Kevin and I moved into our new home my boxes were sent and received. Only one small figurine was damaged. The cost was about $200, including the insurance
It was very exciting and a bit of an adventure to go shopping for furniture and appliances for our new life in our new home. I do not regret for one minute not shipping more of my belongings from the US to Malaysia. My advice to anyone thinking of moving here is to ask yourself how much do you REALLY need and how much can you REALLY live without. Then decide how to ship it here.
