Flood victims who have no homes to return to

KOTA TINGGI: The sun has emerged for several days now and the waters have receded.

One would think that flood victims would welcome the thought of going home.

Not so for the 10 families at the Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim and Balai Raya Kampung Tembioh.

They have no homes to return to, as their houses have been wrecked or swept away by the floods.

Rohana Abdullah, 26, who has been staying at the town hall for the past week with her husband and three children, said the pillars of her wooden house in Kampung Tembioh had collapsed.

When The Star visited her house, it was a heap of planks.

“After the first wave of flooding, the house turned muddy but was still standing. But it could not withstand the second wave,” said Rohana.

Her husband Roslan Md Tahir, 33, who works at a nearby oil palm estate and earns RM500 a month, said:

“When the waters receded, I went to check on my house and was shocked to see that it had collapsed.

“It will take me three to four months to rebuild my home.”

The house had been home to the family, including Roslan’s mother and siblings.

Rojana Abdul Rahman, 47, says her house in Jalan Abdul Aziz is no longer safe to live in.

“The beams and pillars are slanting and I do not feel safe bringing my family home. We are afraid it will fall on us.

“It is not comfortable at the relief centre but we have no choice,” she said.

Janitor Hamdan Abbas’ house was swept away, leaving only its concrete foundation.

“I have to rebuild from scratch. Luckily for me, my uncle stays nearby so I can put up at his house,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Information Minister Datuk Seri Chia Kwang Chye urged agencies under the ministry to gather information such as the needs of the affected families and the amount of losses faced by traders.

“The information will be disseminated to the right parties to make it easier for those who want to donate or give aid,” he said after being briefed on the flood situation by District Officer Norizan Kulob.

Hi Adrienne and katyzzz,

Thank you so much for dropping by. Yes it is indeed a very sad case and I thank God that we didn't have storms yesterday.

My friend went to southern peninsular last Saturday and he said it was devastating. The group we went with took 12 hours to help cleaning up and trying to rebuild some support for the houses on stills until the place is dry enough to rebuild a new core to support the house.

Many have lost almost everything. This also teaches us that materials we gather here on Earth is temporary. It can be with you today and gone tomorrow.

Once again thank you for your support.

Have a blessed day
Jessicca
