Malaysia’s First Day Cover 13 March 2008: Nocturnal Animals

March 13th 2008 06:33
This month’s issue isn’t my utmost favourite series (Don't get me wrong, I still like them, just not the utmost favourite) – the Nocturnal Animals, When I saw part of the designs were an owl I was hoping one of the stamps would have consist of it, but it didn’t. Though a little disappointed but that doesn’t stop my target of trying to get all the First Day Cover series for this year.

As usual, I went to the post office… and with God’s grace there isn’t much traffic today. I only have to wait for 6 people before me and I manage to get everything done within 30 minutes (including 5 minutes walking to the post office). That is quite a good record of time.

The officer (a different person this time) is as busy as ever and he just sold me the stamps and passed me the First Day Cover Chop with today’s date. Gleeful as usual whenever I get my hands on this special chop I carefully placed the stamps in the special edition envelope (I previously did mention they no longer pre-put the stamps into the envelopes) and stamp the date besides the stamps. I still do not have the heart to stamp on those pretty little designs… but I had to stamp on the special edition miniature set of MYR 5 (5 ringgit), as it couldn’t fit into the first day cover envelope.

So lets see what this March issue of the year has to say about their series.
(The second March issue seemed to be postponed until further notice)

Glow in the dark series

The Nocturnal Animals

Introduction
Animals live in virtually every type of habitat available in the Malaysian rainforest and even exploit man-made habitats. One interesting feature in animal ecology and behaviour is that some animals travel and feed mainly by night (nocturnal) as opposed to animals that move about during the day (diurnal). Various birds, mammals and reptiles have evolved towards a nocturnal way of life for numerous reasons. Due to the reduced amount of light at night, strictly nocturnal animals generally gave good night vision to allow them to seek out prey and to avoid predators.

30 Sen Design 1: Moonrat (Echinosorex gymnurus)

Generally solitary, this small mammal is strictly terrestrial and confined to the forest floor, often frequenting areas by the streams and is known to be active by day. It has a very strong body odour in the wild. Earthworms, beetles, spiders and snails are amongst the things it feeds on.

30 Sen Design 2: Malay badger (Mydaus javanensis)

The Malay Badger is a terrestrial animal and is known for its very strong odour. It sleeps in underground burrows and feeds mainly by digging into the ground for food such as earthworms and insect larvae. Although it is usually found in mature forests, it is apparently more frequently seen in secondary forests and open ground such as gardens.

50 Sen Design: Golden car (Catopuma temminckii)

Little is known on the ecology and life history of this medium sized cat. Its coat of golden colour is largely unmarked and adults can weigh as much as 12 kilograms. Although terrestrial, it can apparently climb trees when necessary. Its prey includes mousedeer, birds, lizards and other small animals.

1 Ringgit Design: Flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus)

This is the largest bat in Malaysia and a full-grown adult can weigh more than 1 kilogram. Large roosting colonies of this bat are often found in mangroves or nipah palms. This bat is known to fly long distances to feed on flowering or fruit trees and it is an important pollinator of many forest trees including durians.

2 Ringgit Design: Tarsier (Nycticebus coucang)

This small primate of less than 2 kilograms is active from ground level to at least seven metres above ground and generally leaps from tree to tree. It feeds mainly on large insects and often solitary. Tarsiers is known to make high pitch calls frequently and can be found in both mature and secondary forests.

3 Ringgit Design: Slow loris (Nycticebus coucang)

Largely arboreal, this primate, which can weigh almost a kilogram, is often found alone, although couples with dependent young are sometimes seen. It feeds on small animals, mostly insects, and on pulpy fruits. It lives in mature and secondary forests as well as in gardens and plantations.

Hello Jessica,

What a lovely way to raise awareness. It would be a great way to make the endangered species known of every nation, wouldn't it?

Ooh I just loved that little Teledu ... and as a lover of anything Feline... I adore the Golden Cat... they are all so special... and I note the similarities to the Australian Marsupials?

As for the 'Glow in The Dark Set' WOW what a great idea!

Jessica I will PM you for your postal details and send you some money for one of each of these first editions, if they are readily available...

will talk again soon... thanks for sharing.

Lilla ...
