Malaysia Found - Malaysia2007

Malaysia has voiced out: Election Tsunami

March 10th 2008 05:11
“The nation has spoken”

This would be heard endless times from the politicians of the ruling coalition to the press when the results came out. Indeed the nation has spoken, because for the first time in 40 years, the ruling coalition Barisan National (BN) face a clean swipe and lost 5 major states to the opposition party, particularly from the North region of Peninsular Malaysia. While the ruling coalition still holds majority in the Parliament seats, it no longer has the 2/3 majority win. Clear enough to say that citizens of one of the stronghold of the central city of Kuala Lumpur with its surrounding the state of Selangor has made sure their message has been sent: We Are Fed Up With Your Ruling. No More Discrimination. Change of Wind Is Here and We Want Equality.

There are so many things to write about this year’s General Election. A lot may have said that it is waste of time to vote as the outcome is going to be the same. But this time round the nation make sure that they want the country to make things new. It has been too long that the distribution of power has been set back to one-sided ruling, and every citizen who are eligible to vote has made their effort to do so.

Though the BN has done pretty much to encourage citizens to vote, from giving transportation assistance to rural, cripple, and senior citizens, it did not catch enough hearts of the entire country. Ruling coalition BN even offered sponsors (flight ticket) and allowances (RM200) to voters – especially for the state of Terengganu, it did not help at all. The “hatred” and “fed up” from the nation towards the government was so sickening they really want a change.

“They give the money, we take lah. But what we are going to “cross” on the voting ticket is still our choice.” One of the voting citizen commented.

Honestly from my side, giving carnations for the ladies during Election Day for the celebration of International Women’s Day seemed normal in respect to women. Giving money to voters to return home so that they can vote for them seemed unethical. It looked to me like an outright bribery took place. And I can say that the opposition from the other party did the same – though lesser amount is still unethical… The funniest part of it is one of the opposition party – DAP, did nothing at the pooling station, did not even have volunteers to help checking the records, yet getting almost 50% of the states seats single handed.

What were the voters thinking?

A (finally or hopefully) new ethical democratic Malaysian government?

It is a scary road ahead with unsure how it is going to happen with half of the Peninsular Malaysia in the guidance of opposition party, but citizens of Malaysia have move towards a step of faith and place their future to the new ruling of the country.

Fingers crossed!

Below are more photos to see on how determined the citizens of Malaysia are in this General Election.
