Christmas Comes to Penang
Back home in the US I could always tell when the Christmas season was beginning. First of all the weather began to cool down quite a bit. Secondly Thanksgiving arrives, which means the very next day the decorations come out in the malls and the Christmas sales begin.
Here in Malaysia both of those elements are missing. I have to remember to check the calendar and keep in touch with my relatives to know that Thanksgiving is nearing. The weather is always hot and humid so there is not hint here. Around Halloween the malls have halloween decorations until the end of the day on October 31st. The next day all of the Christmas decorations are up and the Christmas music appears.The Christmas season is here.
I doubt that anyone, with the exception of the expats from Europe, Australia and the US and the few Asian Christians living here, know what Christmas really is. For them it is a season of merriment, buying and giving presents, and nice music. They celebrate in earnest with their Caucasian friends and enjoy the spirit of Christmas.If there was snow on the ground and cold temperatures it would be just like home.
