A Hazy New Year for Kuala Lumpur
February 21st 2008 01:28
I know that I have been pretty much away for an extended time due to work and unexpected hectic life as much are settling down when the festive season sets in. Yet after all the hoo-ha of tourism promotions and celebration of the 50th anniversary of Malaysia 2008 has become a more “laid back” as all eyes are on the coming election in 8 March. I suppose Malaysia has spent well enough celebrations and fireworks last year and this year it suddenly felt pretty quiet.
When curious eyes and ears concentrate on the 12th annual election, the sky gloomed Kuala Lumpur with haze on the last day of Chinese New Year celebration, also called as “Chap Goh Meh” (in Hokkien). Even though there was a short down pour early in the morning but the rain is so little that it not only did not help to clear the skies but it pushed down the haze more to the surface.
So what has caused the haze this time? I haven’t seen anything from the news yet besides Malaysian coming Election… sigh…
When I was driving to work today (I had to as I have practises to go after work) I prayed to God to help clear the sky and give some fresh air to breath, but at another side of thought I wonder has Malaysians realised that sometimes haze doesn’t really comes from neighbouring forest fire (perhaps not this time until I find some news about it) but from our own hands. Have we not realised that it is time to really look at our own land not just a place to sleep of the night but a home to look after? It is really sad when I can hardly see any skyscrapers that are visible to me during a clear day. Even the gloomy hazy sky disturbs the birds.
Not to mention that I can even smell the burning from the air still.
So how long will this pollution last? Lets hope it will clear out soon.
